With record-breaking temperatures here in NYC, I know you might be questioning my sanity in publishing a Substack about coats, but hear me out! I have my reasons.
In the summer of 2022, I found my beloved cashmere Banana Republic coat for under $100, crumpled in the sale section of my local BR. Since then, one of the most frequent requests I get during my monthly Instagram hunts is for an “affordable wool coat.”
The truth is, you're not going to find a 100% wool or cashmere coat that wasn’t made in a sweatshop for under $400–$500—at least not if you’re shopping in the fall or winter. The time to strike is now. (Also: now is when you should be sweater hunting, too.)
The &Daughter sale is currently happening, and June is generally peak sale season. It also marks the end of the spring retail calendar, so many shops are clearing out inventory to make room for fall and winter collections.
If you're nervous about shopping secondhand, start by measuring your current favorite coat, especially one that fits how you like. I almost never pay attention to the listed size and instead go by measurements.
